You see it everywhere. Your friends with under 10% body fat get the good commercials. The Hinge standouts all have the same body composition, with larger than average muscles. As a gay man in LA, it’s impossible to escape the role body image plays in your culture. Thus, body image issues have become an all too common “norm” in society. In a culture that places a premium on physical appearance, it can be challenging to maintain a positive self-image. Here are some ways to help you work through any negative thoughts or feelings you may be having about your body.
Body Image Issues: An All Too Common Issue
Firstly, recognize that body image issues are common among gay men. You are not alone in feeling this way. Many of us struggle with accepting our bodies and feeling comfortable in our skin. Body image issues in the gay community is a widely recognized issue, (it has entered the pop culture zeitgeist through articles like these from Rolling Stone, Vice, and GQ) but solutions are not as frequently discussed. Therefore, it is essential to remember that there is no one “perfect” body type, and every body is unique and valuable in its own way.
What Can This Body Do?
Secondly, focus on what your body can do, not just how it looks. Your body is an incredible machine that allows you to experience the world around you. It helps you run, dance, swim, and feel pleasure. Instead of fixating on what you don’t like about your appearance, try to appreciate all the amazing things your body does for you.
Self-Care’s Role in Conquering Body Image Issues
Thirdly, practice self-care. Taking care of your body can help you feel more comfortable and confident in your skin. This can include activities like exercising, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. Find activities that make you feel good and incorporate them into your routine.
Develop and Utilize your Social Support System
Fourthly, seek support from others. Talk to friends or loved ones about how you’re feeling. You’ll be surprised how many people understand what you’re going through. You may even find that they are experiencing similar thoughts and feelings. If you’re comfortable, consider joining a support group or seeking therapy. A trained therapist can help you work through negative thoughts and develop a healthier relationship with your body.
